the lymphedema is not!&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is a quote from one of my patients that has been indelibly etched in my mind for several years.<\/p>\n<p>Cancer has become a scourge for the Western world in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p>All of us know someone who has gone through cancer or have lost someone to cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The factors that cause it are many and <strong>multidimensional<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Poor diet, lack of movement and activity in life, systematic exposure to radiation (mobile phones, electronic devices, etc.), environmental pollution, stress and anxiety <strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, all of the above <strong>combine<\/strong> on an almost daily basis to &#8220;give birth&#8221; to cancer.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2197 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bioanadrasis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stressed-out-woman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"708\" height=\"406\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_treatment_and_management_of_cancer_is_quite_painful_and_causes_even_more_suffering_and_stress\"><\/span>The treatment and management of cancer is quite <strong>painful<\/strong> and causes even more suffering and stress.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, alone or in any combination, <strong>cause<\/strong> patients <strong>to suffer<\/strong> for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>implications<\/strong> are many: Scarring from surgery, burns sometimes from radiation, hair loss from chemotherapy, dizziness and fatigue from heavy medication, weight loss and a general change in appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Add the uncertainty, anxiety, the massive and unhealthy (often damaging) flow of information about the patient&#8217;s problem and the financial costs that bring additional worry and stress.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;mix&#8217; is really <strong>difficult to<\/strong> manage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bioanadrasis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/a-doctor-explaining.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"434\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But even if there are complications, there is always an end to the whole adventure.<\/p>\n<p>Usually the outcome is<strong> good<\/strong>, as the development of medical science has <strong>significantly increased<\/strong> survival rates while maintaining the fewest possible complications.<\/p>\n<p>The battle is long and difficult, but optimism must be the most important weapon for patients. After all, <strong>battles are fought to be won<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unfortunately_no_battle_ends_without_casualties\"><\/span>Unfortunately, no battle ends without casualties.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Depending on the size of the operation, the accompanying treatments and the patient&#8217;s previous health condition, there will be minor or major complications.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most common complications of cancer is <strong>lymphedema<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Cancer, both as a disease and in its management, essentially affects the <strong>lymphatic system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the management is often the <strong>removal of<\/strong> 2-3 to several lymph nodes.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <strong>irradiation of<\/strong> the tissues is usually performed locally, including parts of the lymphatic system.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>chemotherapies<\/strong> affect the whole body in general and therefore also the lymphatic function.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2194 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bioanadrasis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/%CE%9B%CE%B5%CE%BC%CF%86%CE%BF%CE%AF%CE%B4%CE%B7%CE%BC%CE%B1-%CE%AC%CE%BD%CF%89-%CE%AC%CE%BA%CF%81%CE%BF-3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"457\"><\/p>\n<p>The likelihood of lymphedema depends on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The type and <strong>technique of<\/strong> surgery<\/li>\n<li>If there were <strong>radiation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Although <strong>how many<\/strong> lymph nodes were removed<\/li>\n<li>If the lymph nodes are <strong>infiltrated<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The patient&#8217;s <strong>previous condition<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Unfortunately, there are no studies or reports linking the occurrence of oedema to psychology<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>However, in clinical practice there are many times when we have seen edemas (as a result of a dysfunction of the lymphatic system?) without any serious pathology that would explain them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lymphedema_is_a_chronic_problem\"><\/span>Lymphedema is a chronic problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>incidence rates of<\/strong> lymphedema vary depending on the above factors.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, however, the occurrence of lymphedema is <strong>irreversible<\/strong>, at least according to current epidemiological data.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the patient has to <strong>deal with<\/strong> a problem for the rest of his or her life.<\/p>\n<p>This will sometimes have minor or major functional effects that will affect the person&#8217;s <strong>daily life<\/strong>, depending on the degree and severity of the lymphedema.<\/p>\n<p>Lymphedema is not accompanied by pain. However, the lymph that develops it can become <strong>heavy, stiff, dysfunctional<\/strong> and prone to infection and inflammation. <\/p>\n<p>As a consequence, we may develop <strong>musculoskeletal<\/strong> problems and painful conditions.<\/p>\n<p>But there is another factor that has to do with the <strong>aesthetic<\/strong> part as the lymphedema is visible.<\/p>\n<p>This aspect of swelling affects both the <strong>psychology<\/strong> and the <strong>dress\/practical<\/strong> aspect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2200 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bioanadrasis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/493ss_phototake_rm_lymphedema_patients.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"367\"><\/p>\n<p>In many cases, limbs with advanced lymphedema do not fit into the sleeve or pants, preventing the use of favorite clothes. Or in other cases, the patient has difficulty finding a suitable shoe for their swollen lower limb. <\/p>\n<p>Lymphedema can therefore have all these classic <strong>psychological effects<\/strong> on a person, as with any chronic disease or condition.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_us_the_patient_must_be_treated_comprehensively_and_comprehensively\"><\/span>For us, the patient must be treated comprehensively and comprehensively<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Holistic physiotherapy<\/strong>, which we embrace and apply in <strong>Biofeedback<\/strong>, makes it extremely important to approach the person as a <strong>whole<\/strong> and not as an individual condition.<\/p>\n<p>In the health sector we often refer to the treatment of diseases and illnesses but relatively rarely to the quality of life of the individual.
